History of Dům u Giordanů

Dům u Giordanů is located on the Upper Square in Slavonice and is one of the town’s most important houses. On its richly decorated sgraffito façade, the year 1550 can be found above the main entrance.

History of Dům u Giordanů

This Renaissance house of Gothic origin stands on two plots. The left part was rebuilt during the Renaissance and has survived to the present day, while the right part was added in the 1920s after the reconstruction of a single-storey Baroque building. The more valuable section is the left part, which already had one upper floor during the Renaissance, with three window axes and two masonry gables. On the first floor there are three stone profiled window surrounds and cornices. Each gable has one rectangular window with a stone surround. The early Renaissance gable uses Venetian arches and inverted quarter-circle forms as architectural expression. Much of the original layout has been preserved, and the sgraffito decoration was restored in 2005.

On the ground floor there is a Renaissance entrance hall, which had been divided into several rooms and an entrance corridor during later alterations. The corridor led to the upper floor and to the ground-floor spaces of the adjoining house. During reconstruction at the end of the 20th century, the layout was brought back approximately to its original form. At the beginning of the last century, a restaurant was established in the adjoining space and operated until 1984.

On the first floor is the former Lutheran prayer room with the story of the Revelation of John painted on the walls. It is partly accessible to the public. The house also offers accommodation — five rooms and two apartments with private bathroom facilities.

Since 1992, the house has been owned by the Giordano family.
